SAP HCM after 2027: the payroll decision comes first
On-premise SAP ERP HCM follows the 2027 and 2030 Business Suite dates. The options for core HR and payroll, and why payroll usually decides the roadmap.

SAP ERP HCM sits inside Business Suite 7, so it follows the same timeline: mainstream maintenance to the end of 2027 and optional extended maintenance from 2028 to the end of 2030. For HR teams this is often the least visible part of an S/4HANA programme, until someone asks what happens to payroll.
The routes available
SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central and Employee Central Payroll. Core HR in the cloud, with payroll run in SAP's cloud on the same payroll engine many customers already know. This is where SAP is investing and where its payroll innovation is focused.
SAP HCM for S/4HANA (on-premise). An on-premise HR and payroll option that runs alongside S/4HANA. It is aimed at existing HCM customers and is not offered to new clients.
Hybrid. Talent processes such as recruiting, performance and learning move to SuccessFactors first, while core HR and payroll stay on-premise for a period and are integrated.
SAP ERP, private edition transition option. For eligible RISE with SAP customers, a way to keep ECC, including HCM, running in SAP's private cloud from 2031 to 2033 while the move completes.
Why payroll decides
Payroll carries years of country rules, union agreements, custom schemas and rules, retroactive calculations and year-end processes. It cannot be wrong even once. A good plan starts by assessing payroll:
- how many custom schemas, rules and wage types are in use and why;
- which countries and agreements are covered;
- how payroll is reconciled and posted to finance;
- which third parties (benefits, time, pensions, tax filing) receive payroll data.
That assessment shows whether a move to Employee Central Payroll is mostly technical or a redesign, and it tells you how many parallel payroll runs to plan.
Practical sequencing
Many companies move talent modules first, then core HR, then payroll, with Payroll Control Center used to monitor results during parallel runs. Others move core HR and payroll together to avoid a long integration period. Either can work. What does not work is leaving payroll until the last six months before a deadline.
