SAP S/4HANA Cloud, public and private edition

S/4HANA Cloud gives you the S/4HANA digital core as a service. We implement both editions and help you choose between them based on how standard you can run and how much control you need over upgrades.

Choosing an edition

Both editions share the S/4HANA data model and Fiori experience. The differences are in control and flexibility.

Software as a service

Public Edition

  • Multi-tenant system on SAP's standard configuration content
  • SAP upgrades every customer twice a year, with continuous feature delivery in between
  • Extend with key user tools, ABAP Cloud and side-by-side apps on BTP
  • Fastest to implement, with the least technical overhead

Fits when: Midsize companies, subsidiaries and new businesses that can run close to SAP's standard processes.

Single tenant, managed by SAP

Private Edition

  • Your own S/4HANA system, run by SAP on a hyperscaler
  • Full configuration access, industry solutions and classic extensibility
  • You decide when to upgrade, within SAP's maintenance windows
  • Usually reached through RISE with SAP, often by converting ECC

Fits when: Large enterprises with complex or industry-specific processes, or an ECC system worth converting.

What we deliver

Fit-to-standard workshops
Run in a starter system with SAP Best Practices scope items, so the business sees how the standard process works before asking for changes.
Configuration and SSCUIs
Self-service configuration in the Central Business Configuration tool for Public Edition, and full IMG configuration for Private Edition.
Extensibility
Custom fields and logic, custom CDS views, ABAP Cloud developer extensibility and side-by-side apps on BTP, all on released APIs.
Integration
Communication arrangements, OData and SOAP APIs, events and Integration Suite flows to banks, tax engines, EDI partners and your other systems.
Two-tier ERP
Subsidiaries on Public Edition connected to a headquarters system on S/4HANA or ECC: intercompany, master data distribution and consolidated reporting.
Upgrade readiness
Release assessment, regression testing with automated tests and the change communication needed to keep up with the cadence.

S/4HANA Cloud questions

Can we change our minds later?

Moving between editions is a new implementation, not a switch. That is why the decision deserves a proper assessment of your processes and growth plans up front.

How do we keep up with two upgrades a year?

With a small set of automated regression tests on your critical processes, a named owner for each release and a habit of reading the release notes before the upgrade rather than after it.
