SAP Business AI and Joule
SAP is building AI into the applications you already run, through Joule, embedded AI features and agents that can carry out work across processes. We help you decide which of it is worth switching on, get your data and roles ready for it, and build the agents SAP does not ship.
Where SAP Business AI stands in 2026
Joule started as a copilot that answered questions and navigated apps. At Sapphire in May 2026, SAP repositioned it as the way people work with SAP: Joule routes requests to more than fifty domain assistants across finance, supply chain, spend, HR and customer engagement, which in turn call on a growing catalogue of agents that can run in the background on events or schedules. SAP calls the target state the autonomous enterprise.
Underneath sit the pieces that make this work or fail: the SAP Knowledge Graph and Business Data Cloud for business context, the generative AI hub for model access, Joule Studio for building your own agents, and governance to see and control what every agent does. The technology is moving fast. The work that decides whether it helps you is slower: clean master data, correct authorisations, processes that are documented well enough for an agent to follow, and a way to measure the result.
What we do
- AI opportunity assessment
- We map your processes against the AI features and agents available for your products and licences, and rank them by value, readiness and risk. You get a short list worth piloting, not a catalogue.
- Joule activation
- Technical setup across S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba and BTP: identity, the Joule formation, content scoping, role assignment and the change management that gets people to use it.
- Agents for finance and supply chain
- Piloting SAP's agents for scenarios such as cash collection, dispute resolution, invoice matching, maintenance planning and supply disruption, with clear human approval points.
- Custom agents with Joule Studio
- Agents and skills built in Joule Studio and SAP Build, grounded in your data through APIs and the Knowledge Graph, and deployed with the same transport and testing discipline as any other code.
- Generative AI hub
- Applications on SAP AI Core that use foundation models from several providers through the generative AI hub, with prompt management, grounding on your documents, content filtering and data masking.
- Embedded AI and document AI
- Switching on the AI features already in S/4HANA, such as intelligent scenarios managed through ISLM, and automating document-heavy work like supplier invoices and sales orders with document information extraction.
- Data readiness
- Master data quality, Business Data Cloud data products and Datasphere models that give AI accurate, permissioned context.
- Governance and measurement
- Usage policies, authorisation design for agents, audit trails, and before-and-after metrics so you know whether an AI scenario is paying for its AI units.
Typical engagement
A typical first AI engagement
Most clients begin with a six to eight week engagement: an assessment workshop with process owners, Joule switched on for a pilot group, and one or two agents or AI features piloted on a measurable process such as accounts receivable collection or supplier invoice processing.
At the end you have usage data, measured results against a baseline, a cost picture in AI units and a decision on what to scale. If a pilot does not move the numbers, we say so.

AI questions
Is our data safe with SAP's AI?
SAP states that customer data is not used to train the shared foundation models, and the generative AI hub supports data masking and content filtering. We still review each scenario with your security and legal teams, because what data an agent may see is a policy decision, not a technical one.
Do we need to be on S/4HANA Cloud to use Joule?
The broadest coverage is in SAP's cloud applications, and SAP has said many new assistants will also work with on-premise and older ERP systems. Which capabilities you can use depends on your products, releases and licences, so we check that before anything else.
How is SAP Business AI priced?
Mostly through AI units consumed per use, on top of the underlying application licences. We include a cost estimate in every assessment so the business case is honest.
